I Swapped My Morning Coffee for Cacao at Bondi — Here's What Happened
Share
I moved to Sydney in late 2025. Bondi Beach is basically my backyard, which still doesn't feel real. Most mornings I'd walk down, coffee in hand, staring at one of the most beautiful stretches of ocean in the world — and somehow still feel like I hadn't quite arrived yet.
That changed when I started drinking cacao.
The First Sip Changed Everything
I'll be honest — I was sceptical. Cacao as a coffee replacement sounded like something people said at wellness retreats and didn't actually follow through on. But I was curious enough to try.
The first morning I made it properly — slowly, intentionally, with hot water and nothing else — I sat with it at the beach and something shifted. There was no jolt. No spike. Just a slow, warm wave of clarity that settled over me like the morning light on the water.
I felt awake — but calm. Present. Like my body had been waiting for this.
What Coffee Was Actually Doing to Me
I didn't realise how wired coffee was making me until I stopped. The low-grade anxiety I'd normalised. The afternoon crash. The way I'd reach for a second cup not because I wanted it, but because I needed it just to feel baseline.
Ceremonial cacao contains theobromine — a gentle, long-lasting stimulant that increases blood flow and energy without the cortisol spike that caffeine triggers. It also contains magnesium, iron, and anandamide — literally known as the bliss molecule. No wonder I felt different.
But beyond the science, it was the ritual that changed me.
The Ritual is the Point
Coffee is something you grab. Cacao is something you make.
That distinction sounds small. It isn't. When you slow down to prepare something with intention — to heat the water carefully, to whisk it, to hold the warm cup in both hands — you're already doing something radical. You're choosing presence over autopilot.
My morning walk to Bondi became something I looked forward to differently. Not as a caffeine delivery system, but as a ritual. A moment that was mine before the world asked anything of me.
What I Notice Now
Three months in, here's what's changed: I sleep better. My energy is steadier throughout the day — no 3pm crash, no desperate second coffee. My anxiety has noticeably softened. And I start every morning with something that feels intentional rather than reactive.
I'm not saying coffee is bad. I'm saying that for me, it wasn't serving me the way I thought it was.
Cacao did something coffee never could — it made me want to slow down.
How to Try It
If you're curious, start simple. Our ceremonial grade Criollo cacao from Peru is 100% pure — no additives, no sugar, nothing but the cacao itself in its most potent form. Shave or break off about 25–40g, melt it into hot water (not boiling — around 70°C), whisk until frothy, and sit somewhere you love.
Bondi at sunrise is a good option. But your kitchen table works too.
The ritual is wherever you make it.
