The Maya & Aztec — Cacao as Sacred Medicine
The Maya called it kakaw and believed it to be a gift from the gods. They used cacao in sacred rituals, birth ceremonies, and royal feasts — preparing it as a bitter, spiced drink mixed with chilli, vanilla, and water. Cacao was so highly valued that the beans were used as currency, and only the elite — kings, priests, and warriors — had access to the finest varieties. The Aztecs took this reverence even further, associating cacao with Quetzalcoatl — the feathered serpent god of wisdom and wind. Their ceremonial cacao drink, xocolātl, was consumed before battle, in spiritual ceremony, and as an offering to the gods. It was believed to grant strength, clarity, and an open heart.
From the Americas to the World
When Spanish conquistadors arrived in the 16th century, they encountered cacao and brought it back to Europe — where it was sweetened with sugar and transformed into hot chocolate fashionable among European royalty. Over the centuries, the sacred origins of cacao were largely forgotten as it became commercialised and mass-produced.
